Cleaning Your Contacts: The Proverbial Record Scratch

Picture a 35mm, pristine, slow-motion shot of you falling into bed, complete with clean sheets, pajamas, and a big smile. Now cue the proverbial record scratch. If you wear contact lenses, you hear that record scratch every night. As a bona fide contact wearer you are responsible for keeping those little contact lenses clean as a whistle.

Dodging bullies and epitaphs like “four eyes” means you have to accept these responsibilities willingly. This mean you must always stop yourself from falling asleep. It only takes one slip to feel the burning nightmare of an eye infection. Peeling off a pair of protein-encrusted contacts is not for the faint of heart. Save yourself these unpleasant occasions and take out your contacts.

Relax — pace yourself. You are only halfway home. If your contacts weren’t enough of a hassle, washing your hands before you begin will be. But the oils and bacteria on your hands can taint your contact case and make render the entire cleaning process null and void. It would be tantamount to making a gourmet meal and serving it on dirty dishes.

Step up to the pitcher’s mound and think of three strikes. Strike one: you wash your hands. Strike two: clean your contacts. Strike three:hit the sack. Just be sure with strike two you rub your contacts. Technically, you could not rub your contacts if you are using a no-rub solution, but most optometrists recommend you rub regardless. It’s that bit of friction that really loosens and removes the protein build-up.

Oh, we’ll have to have a strike four. After your contacts are clean, you have to soak them in a sterile case. If you are using a hydrating contact solution, your contacts should feel as good as new in the morning. Just be sure to wash your hands before touching your contacts. This is a cardinal rule no matter what time you clock out or clock in.

Optimal contact care involves effective cleaning solutions, rubbing, and baseball. Swing batter, swing. Visit the Uber Article Directory to get a totally unique version of this article for reprint.
